COMMON CRIMES OF VIOLENCE:  

MURDER: No person shall purposely cause the death of another or the unlawful termination of another's pregnancy.

No person shall cause the death of another as a proximate result of the offender's committing or attempting to commit an offense of violence that is a felony of the first or second degree and that is not a violation of section 2903.03 or 2903.04 of the Revised Code.

 

Division (B) of this section does not apply to an offense that becomes a felony of the first or second degree only if the offender previously has been convicted of that offense or another specified offense. Ohio R.C. 2903.02

VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER: 

No person shall knowingly cause the death of another person or the unlawful termination of another’s pregnancy by:

  • The heat of passion or rage

  • Serious provocation by the victim

Voluntary manslaughter is a felony of the first degree. Ohio R.C. 2903.03

INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER: 

No Person shall cause the death of another or unlawfully terminates the pregnancy of another by:

  • Committing or attempting to commit a felony

  • Attempting to commit or committing a misdemeanor or other regulatory offense. Ohio R.C. 2903.04

ROBBERY: A person can be charged with robbery if:

  • They have a deadly weapon on their body or under their control.

  • They inflict, attempt to inflict, or threaten to inflict physical harm on another person.

  • They use or threaten immediate force against another while attempting or committing a theft, or while immediately fleeing after the attempt or commission of a theft. Ohio R.C. 2911.02. 

KIDNAPPING: No person, by force, threat, or deception, or, in the case of a victim under the age of thirteen or mentally incompetent, by any means, shall remove another from the place where the other person is found or restrain the liberty of the other person, for any of the following purposes:

  1. To hold for ransom, or as a shield or hostage;

  2. To facilitate the commission of any felony or flight thereafter;

  3. To terrorize, or to inflict serious physical harm on the victim or another;

  4. To engage in sexual activity, as defined in section 2907.01 of the Revised Code, with the victim against the victim's will;

  5. To hinder, impede, or obstruct a function of government, or to force any action or concession on the part of governmental authority;

  6. To hold in a condition of involuntary servitude. Ohio R.C. 2905.01

ABDUCTION: No person, without privilege to do so, shall knowingly do any of the following: 

  1. By force or threat, remove another from the place where the other person is found;

  2. By force or threat, restrain the liberty of another person under circumstances that create a risk of physical harm to the victim or place the other person in fear;

  3. Hold another in a condition of involuntary servitude. Ohio R.C. 2905.02

UNLAWFUL RESTRAINT: No person, without privilege to do so, shall knowingly restrain another of the other person's liberty. 

 

No person, without privilege to do so and with a sexual motivation, shall knowingly restrain another of the other person's liberty.

 

Whoever violates this section is guilty of unlawful restraint, a misdemeanor of the third degree. Ohio R.C. 2905.03

EXTORTION: No person, with purpose to obtain any valuable thing or valuable benefit or to induce another to do an unlawful act, shall do any of the following:

  1. Threaten to commit any felony;

  2. Threaten to commit any offense of violence;

  3. Violate section 2903.21 or 2903.22 of the Revised Code;

  4. Utter or threaten any calumny against any person;

  5. Expose or threaten to expose any matter tending to subject any person to hatred, contempt, or ridicule, or to damage any person's personal or business repute, or to impair any person's credit. Ohio R.C. 2905.11

COERCION: No person, with purpose to coerce another into taking or refraining from action concerning which the other person has a legal freedom of choice, shall do any of the following:

  1. Threaten to commit any offense;

  2. Utter or threaten any calumny against any person;

  3. Expose or threaten to expose any matter tending to subject any person to hatred, contempt, or ridicule, to damage any person's personal or business repute, or to impair any person's credit;

  4. Institute or threaten criminal proceedings against any person;

  5. Take, withhold, or threaten to take or withhold official action, or cause or threaten to cause official action to be taken or withheld. Ohio R.C. 2905.12
